Biden’s party sees midterm prospects suddenly perk up after a miserable year
For months, the prevailing assumption in American politics was that Joe Biden’s Democrats were lumbering on the conveyor belt straight to the electoral slaughterhouse.
That assumption gets tested today.
A bellwether district in central New York State is voting ahead of November’s midterms. It’s a swing seat — the 19th congressional district — which has flipped between the parties and which Biden won by barely a percentage point in 2020.
Should Democrats prevail in a byelection there, it would underscore that their surprising shows of strength in Nebraska, Minnesota and Kansas recently were more than a summer mirage.
