California Central Coast residents are losing overnight access to the only free beach campsite in the Big Sur area because visitors wouldn’t clean up after themselves.
On Thursday, the California Coastal Commission announced that overnight camping and campfires will be banned at San Carpoforo Beach, located off Highway 1 in northern San Luis Obispo County, for up to two years.
San Carpoforo Beach, also known as San Carpo, is the only free beach campsite in the Big Sur area. According to a California Coastal Commission staff report, this fact became more widely known recently, which has caused visitors — and thus trash — to spike.
