Advocates for legalizing marijuana have long argued it would strike a blow for social justice after a decades-long drug war that disproportionately targeted minority and poor communities. The Legislation will allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana to patients with chronic conditions such as cancer, glaucoma, AIDS, and more, rather than prescription painkillers.

Backers of the bi-partisan legislation claim cannabis is safer form of treatment and will help fight the opioid epidemic.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports more than 130 people die from opioid overdose every day.

The law is scheduled to go into effect on August 2nd, 2019.
