President Donald Trump wanted another round of stimulus checks worth as much as $2,000 per American but was stopped last-minute by White House aides on Thursday, The Washington Post reported.
The report cited two anonymous sources who claimed that Trump told allies on a Thursday phone call that he wanted the next coronavirus relief package to include checks worth $1,200 to $2,000 per individual. The demand was significantly higher than the legislation Congress is currently working to approve, which includes checks that offer $600 per person.
The negotiations come following months of stalled talks as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell failed to come to an agreement.
