WATCH: Dunkin Donuts refuses to serve family for speaking Somali – then calls the cops on them – By Noor Al-Sibai (rawstory.com) / Oct 18 2018
A Dunkin Donuts manager in Maine refused to serve a Somali family for speaking their native language — and then called the police on them.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the owner of the Portland, Maine Dunkin Donuts location met with 20-year-old college student Hamdia Ahmed to apologize for the incident that went viral after she posted it on Facebook and Twitter.
Ahmed said that on Monday afternoon, she and her family were at the drive-thru of the coffee and donuts chain when, over the speaker, a shift manager told them to “stop yelling.”
“All of a sudden we heard a woman say, ‘stop yelling, stop yelling,’” the college student — who also is a model and an anti-racist activist — told the Press Herald. “We’re like what’s happening. We’re just having a conversation. We were talking in Somali.”
“She told us she’s not going to take our order and for us to leave and she was going to call the police,” she added.
In video Ahmed posted of the incident, the student can be heard asking the Dunkin Donuts shift manager why she “disrespected” her family for speaking Somali.
Ahmed went inside to speak to the manager, which is where she snapped a photo of the employee in question. Police soon arrived and issued the student a no-trespass order that was later rescinded after the franchise owner apologized.
