EDITORIAL: Lawmakers failed Nevadans by failing to pass gun violence bill – By Las Vegas Sun Editorial Board (Las Vegas Sun) / July 11 2021

The threat of gun violence in Las Vegas casinos is a public health crisis that leaves every single Nevadan at risk, even those who don’t work in the gaming industry or patronize local resorts.

Here’s why: Visitors will think twice about coming here if they don’t think they’ll be safe while they’re in town. That means shootings on the Strip not only put casino staff members and patrons in jeopardy, but threaten to derail the economy of Southern Nevada — and by extension the entire state — if the violence reaches the point where families and conventiongoers feel they won’t be secure here.

Given this threat, it was beyond disappointing that Nevada lawmakers this year rejected a bill that would have given resorts a new tool to address gun violence.

The legislation, Senate Bill 452, would have allowed casinos to become gun-free zones similar to schools, libraries, government buildings, etc., and would have made violations punishable as a misdemeanor crime.
