    Fires near Azusa, Lancaster still burning out of control, with triple-digit temps, thunderstorms hampering firefighters – By Josh Cain (Los Angeles Daily News) / Aug 16

    Firefighters struggling through intense heat in difficult terrain while fighting the still spreading Ranch2 fire in the mountains north of Azusa on Sunday faced more extreme weather in the late afternoon, with approaching thunderstorms bringing strong winds, hail and possible flash floods.

    The sweltering weather, with temperatures reaching triple-digits, posed a challenge for fire crews on the ground for most of the day, as they trudged up the sides of San Gabriel Canyon, just west of Highway 39.

    “It’s just so hot today,” said Daniela Zepeda, a spokeswoman for the Angeles National Forest.

    An excessive heat warning was issued for all of Southern California, except for the coasts, according to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles. The heat broke records in some places — a high of 92 degree at UCLA broke the record set in 1941.
