First San Francisco mayoral debate canceled after three candidates pull out – By Alec Regimbal (SFGate) / May 17, 2024

After Breed, Peskin and Lurie said they won’t attend, TogetherSF Action said the political establishment is ‘afraid of change’

LATEST May 17, 5:00 p.m. TogetherSF Action announced late Friday afternoon it was canceling a mayoral debate scheduled for Monday that the group had planned to host. The decision follows the news that three of the five serious candidates for San Francisco mayor, Mayor London Breed, Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin and local nonprofit leader Daniel Lurie, would pull out of the event.

In a news release, TogetherSF Action called the news “difficult,” but said it was still committed to delivering a mayoral debate.

“Their refusal to show up and speak to the largest community of voters in San Francisco proves that our movement to hold our elected officials accountable to results is working,” the release said. “If the mere announcement of a real mayoral debate in which candidates would be asked tough questions causes this much drama, the political establishment must be really afraid of change.”
