Former Gen. McChrystal, Fired by Obama, Endorses Biden for 2020 – By Paul D. Shinkman (US News) / Oct 1 2020
Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who disparaged the vice president and was relieved of command of all forces in Afghanistan, has come out for Biden as ‘honest’ and ‘humble.’
A FORMER TOP GENERAL who was fired in part for disparaging comments about then-Vice President Joe Biden endorsed the Democratic presidential candidate on Thursday, saying the nation needs in a commander in chief “an honest person who will listen.”
“I’m looking for a president who is humble enough to understand that they are a servant,” retired Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
“I don’t think we need a genius, I don’t think we need a magician,” said McChyrstal, who has written books about leadership and in retirement has advocated for increasing various forms of public service for young people. “We need someone who will take any information, surround themselves with talented people and lead the country as best as they can. Anyone we choose will make mistakes, that’s for sure, but the reality is if we pick for character, if we pick for values, we’ll be best off.”
Though he didn’t mention President Donald Trump by name in the five-minute interview, McChrystal’s comments could only be interpreted as a condemnation of his tenure, marred by reports of trusting his own instincts over the advice of experts and analysts. Trump has also come under fire in recent weeks for reportedly disparaging service members – particularly those who have been killed in battle – as “suckers” and “losers.” McChrystal’s father was a major general and his grandfather was a colonel, both in the Army. His older brother is a retired Army chaplain who reached the rank of colonel.
