George P. Bush: ‘Unacceptable’ Texas Still Waiting For Hurricane Harvey Aid – By Jason Devaney (Newsmax) / Jan 30 2019
Texas is still waiting for more than $4 billion in federal aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which devastated the Houston area in 2017, and now a member of the Bush family is calling on President Donald Trump to take action.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush wrote to Trump and asked for some answers.
“This is unacceptable,” Bush wrote to Trump. “I need your help to cut through the red tape and call on HUD and OMB to publish the rules governing the $4.383 billion appropriated to Texas immediately.”
Bush has previously written to Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and Mick Mulvaney, who at the time was the director of the Office of Management and Budget but has since taken on the role of acting chief of staff. Neither responded to the letters.
“Show us the dignity of a response,” Bush wrote to Trump. “Send me back a letter. Call me.”
The money is tied up in red tape as federal government agencies try to set rules on how it can be used. Congress appropriated the funding in February 2018 but the money has yet to arrive in Texas.
Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Houston area on Aug. 24, 2017 as a category 4 storm. It lingered for several days, dumping more than 40 inches of rain in some spots. Massive flooding ensued, and 103 Texans died as a direct result of the storm. It was one of the most expensive hurricanes in U.S. history.
Trump personally wrote $1 million worth of checks to 12 charities helping with Harvey relief after the storm passed.
