George Zimmerman files libel lawsuit against Pete Buttigieg, Elizabeth Warren – By Tim Balk (New York Daily News) / Feb 19 2020
George Zimmerman, who fatally shot unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin eight years ago, leveled a libel lawsuit Tuesday against presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren, accusing the Democrats of defaming him on Twitter.
Zimmerman, 36, filed the suit in circuit court in Polk County, Fla., alleging that chirps from the two politicians’ official campaign accounts constituted “misguided and malicious attempts” to pull in support from black voters. The suit asked for more than $265 million in damages.
Zimmerman was working a neighborhood watch shift in 2012 when he shot Martin, 17, on a winter night in the Florida city of Sanford.
A year later, Zimmerman was acquitted of charges of murder and manslaughter in a controversial jury verdict. Zimmerman argued he acted in self-defense when he shot the boy, and he said Martin tackled him to the pavement.
