How will hemp products fare in new federal farm bill? What one key TN US House member says – By Vivian Jones (Nashville Tennessean) / Sept 5, 2023
When Congress returns from its August recess, one urgent item on the agenda will be the federal farm bill, a measure that is passed and expires every five years and reauthorizes agriculture programs, including the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, which provides food assistance for needy families.
When the current Farm Bill passed in 2018, it broadly legalized hemp-derived cannabinoid products – including those that can produce a high similar to marijuana
Federal legalization has led to a boom in the sale of products containing cannabidiol (CBD), delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol, and other hemp-derived compounds – including a $200 million hemp-derived goods industry in Tennessee.
Delta-8 remained unregulated in Tennessee until this year, when lawmakers adopted basic guardrails requiring certain lab testing and labeling requirements, and prohibiting sale of the products to anyone under 21.
