Jersey City shooting: Gov. Murphy lauds courage of police, says ‘this was an incredibly tough day’ – By Karen Yi (NJ.com) / Dec 10 2019

Gov. Phil Murphy lauded Jersey City police for their courage Tuesday night in the wake of a horrific shootout in Jersey City that officials say left six people dead – including a city police officer and two suspects.

“Unfortunately tonight, we mourn the loss of a brave member of the Jersey City police department, , Officer Joseph Seals … He gave his life in the line of duty and in the name of service to his community,” said the governor.

“This was an incredibly tough day for Jersey City, for the entire state of New Jersey,” Murphy said. “There are days that require us to stop and think about what it means to put on a uniform every day, And God knows this is one of those days. But, that’s what these men and women do every single day, and we cannot thank them enough.”

Murphy said “we also mourn the innocent victims.”

The governor stressed “there are no ongoing threats to public safety that have any connections to today’s events.”

Murphy spoke at the South District Police Precinct on Bergen Avenue Tuesday night after the hours-long shooting event that spanned multiple locations in the city’s Greenville neighborhood.

Six people were killed in the shooting, including veteran Jersey City Police Officer Joseph Seals, a married father form North Arlington, officials confirmed.
