Job bust: Most Ohio metro areas lost workers in 2019 – By Mark Williams (The Columbus Dispatch) / March 15 2020
After posting job gains coming out of the Great Recession, many of Ohio’s mid-size metro areas are losing jobs again. Many are dependent on manufacturing jobs and struggle with stagnant or falling population.
Many of Ohio’s already-battered metro areas are losing jobs — again.
Outside Ohio’s three biggest cities, only Dayton had more jobs in January than it did a year ago, according to Ohio Department of Job and Family Services data released last week.
Some of the job losses over the past year in these smaller metros have been steep — 5,500 jobs in Youngstown and 4,300 in Akron. Some of the losses in the Youngstown metro area are tied to the closing of the General Motors plant in Lordstown last year.
Other metro areas have suffered as well.
Toledo and Mansfield, for example, have lost 1,200 jobs apiece over the past year.
As has been the case for many years, Columbus posted the best job gains over the past year, adding 10,800 positions. The region now has about the same number of jobs as Cincinnati.
