Lakewood Church-goers were surprised by a nearly-nude, pro-choice protest in the middle of service on Sunday. As Pastor Joel Osteen began preaching, three women stood up, stripped down to their underwear and shouted “my body, my choice!” and “overturn Roe, hell no!”
The activists are members of Austin-based Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights. The organization posted video of the moment on Twitter and TikTok, where the footage has garnered thousands of views. The demonstration follows a Supreme Court draft majority opinion leaked last month suggesting the high court is poised to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion legal nationwide.
“I know it seems very outrageous to do it in a church in a private space,” activist Julianne D’Eredita told KPRC 2. “However, the people that are enforcing these laws have no qualms coming up to women in private spaces such as doctors’ offices and medical clinics to harass them and call them murderers.”
