California representative Linda Sanchez, a member of the House minority leadership, says in an interview set to air Sunday on C-SPAN’s Newsmakers that it’s time for a new generation of Democrats to replace Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, and Jim Clyburn.
This is significant, given that Sanchez is No. 5 on the Democratic pecking order in the lower chamber. But so is the way the question that elicited her answer was framed, and how she responded accordingly.
Asked the Los Angeles Times’s Sarah Wire, “If Democrats win back the House in 2018, should they keep the same leaders?”
Responded Sanchez:
“I personally think that our leadership does a tremendous job, but I do think we have this breadth and depth of talent in our caucus, and I do think it’s time to pass the torch to a new generation of leaders. And I want to be a part of that transition. I want to see that happen. I think we have too many really great members here that don’t always get the opportunities that they should. And I would like to see that change.”
Sanchez was later pressed if her call extended to Hoyer and Clyburn, the No. 2 and No. 3 House Democrats.
“Win or lose after next year, it’s time for her to go?” asked the Washington Post’s Ed O’Keefe. “Her, Steny Hoyer, Jim Clyburn, all three of them, perhaps?”
“I think that it’s time to pass the torch to a new generation,” Sanchez responded. “They are all of the same generation. And again, their contributions to the Congress and to the caucus are substantial. But I think there comes a time when you need to pass that torch and I think it’s time.”
Two times Sanchez was asked if House Democrats should shake up their leadership after next year’s midterm elections. That she said yes, in so many words, is notable, but it’s notable from the standpoint of the party’s future, not its present. Its present incorporates the midterm elections.
