Mattis: DACA Recipients Serving in the Military and Veterans Will Not Be Deported – OAN Newsroom (oann.com) / Feb 9 2018
Defense Secretary James Mattis said ‘Dreamers’ serving in the military, or who were honorably discharged, will not face deportation even if the DACA program expires.
On Thursday, Mattis said protections apply to service members on active duty in the reserves or those who have served their country in the past.
Mattis said the only exception would be if a service member committed a serious felony or if a federal judge signed a final deportation order.
His statement is good news for the 800 DACA recipients currently enrolled in the armed forces.
The DACA program is set to expire on Monday, March 5, and is a contentious subject as immigration negotiations continue in Congress.
