There’s apparently no end in sight to the ridicule, scorn and derision being heaped upon the current incarnation of the United States men’s Olympic basketball team on social media, which on Sunday shockingly lost its opener at the Tokyo Olympics, 83-76 to France.
Let’s be clear. No one was ever going to compare this incarnation favourably in any way to the iconic 1992 U.S. team, the first in Olympic history permitted to include pros. Not in buzzy names, nor in on-court prowess.
Some of the sport’s most legendary players starred on that gold-medal winning team 29 years ago, including Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Clyde Drexler and Charles Barkley. The victory margins in that team’s eight games ranged from 32 points (over Croatia in the final) to 68 points (over Angola in the opener).
