Public schools received the biggest share of this year’s state general fund budget. Now, it’s up to districts and the state Public Education Department to deliver.
In total, some $4.17 billion in recurring funds, or almost 44% of the state’s total budget signed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Friday, is going to schools and educators, according to the state Finance and Administration Department.
This year’s appropriations mark a roughly $300 million increase from last year.
“As a person that has been in public education for my entire career, this is the most that (we’ve) ever spent on students,” Education Secretary Arsenio Romero told the Journal. “This is going to allow us to have the resources, the professional development, the tools necessary across our state to be able to tackle some of the issues that we know are there.”
