Oh, God! Donald Trump Doesn’t Understand the Bible Because Jesus Isn’t Joseph’s Son – By Cristina Maza (newsweek.com) / Dec 1 2017
Sweet Jesus, Donald Trump doesn’t even understand the Bible’s most important story!
At Thursday night’s annual Christmas tree lighting at the White House, the president recounted the birth of Jesus by saying it “begins 2,000 years ago with a mother, a father, their baby son.”
Their baby? Um, care to take a paternity test?
As all devout Christians believe, Jesus is not the son of Joseph, but of God. Yes, the future savior was born in Bethlehem during the time of Herod to Mary, the wife of Joseph. And, as Luke 2:1-20 tells us, Joseph was around when Jesus was born.
But he is not the father. He with a capital H is.
Some devout Christians were outraged, calling Trump a heretic for denying the virgin birth.
“Since Trump is obviously a heretic who denies the Virgin Birth, I’d only point out that Joseph was not, according to the Bible, the father of Jesus,” tweeted Jeffrey K. Walker, adding the hashtag #MoronInChief.
“According to the bible, GOD was the father of Jesus. Faux Christian Trump who does not attend church!” added a Twitter user named Arizona.
Others, however, came to Trump’s defense, noting that God had named Joseph as Jesus’s father on Earth.
Most of these details were brushed over, however, as Trump made a show of celebrating Christian symbolism. The president often uses Christianity to appeal to his conservative Christian base, often to the detriment of other religious minorities, particularly Muslims.
On the campaign trail, then-candidate Trump often claimed that the U.S. had become too multicultural, too politically correct, and too respectful of religious pluralism. “We’re saying ‘Merry Christmas’ again!” he pledged.
Trump also became the first sitting president to attend the Value Voters Summit, which is organized by a Christian group with a long history of political involvement.
But the president has consistently failed to demonstrate that he is genuinely religious. In 2015, Trump declared that the Bible was his “favorite book,” but then struggled to think of a single Bible verse when pressed about which was his favorite.
During a visit to Liberty University, a conservative Christian school, while on the campaign trail in 2016, Trump mistakenly called the eighth book of the New Testament “the Two Corinthians” instead of second Corinthians. His error was met with laughter by the school’s students.
Thursday’s event, despite the pomp and circumstance, seemed to be yet another demonstration of Trump’s fundamental lack of understanding of Christianity. Still, it’s unlikely this will cause him to lose support among his Christian base.
“Every one of us is a child of God,” the president said Thursday. “This is the true source of joy this time of the year.”
