    A proposal to integrate six of Pennsylvania’s state universities into two separate institutions had its first airing at the state Capitol on Monday, a session that made it clear this idea is not going to be an easy sell to lawmakers.

    State System of Higher Education Chancellor Dan Greenstein was peppered with questions about these institutions might look like if Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield are combined into one university California, Clarion and Edinboro universities into another.

    Right off the bat near the start of the hearing, he was interrogated by Rep. Gerald Mullery, D-Luzerne County, about the impact it could have on athletics.

    “Have you had any interaction with the NCAA either giving them notice or receiving any feedback from them regarding the participation or continued participation of these institutions in the NCAA or the eligibility of the student athletes involved,” Mullery asked.

    Greenstein answered that question much the same way as he responded to several others about the impact it would have on students, academic programming, faculty, and the communities that host the universities.
