Republican senators run the gamut from wanting Roe v. Wade overturned to just plain running away – By Laura Clawson (dailykos.com) / June 28 2018
Abortion would be immediately banned in 17 states if Roe v. Wade is overturned, a very real prospect if Donald Trump is allowed to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. With Republicans holding a narrow majority in the Senate, reporters are asking GOP senators what they’re thinking about the future of Roe as they think about their vote.
Guess what? Yeah, there are absolutely Republicans who would love to see Roe overturned and women lose control over their own bodies and medical decisions. Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst didn’t pretend otherwise, saying “I’m pro-life, so I think that’s a good goal to have when you’re pro-life.” Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch would “like to” see Roe overturned, but claims to think it won’t happen—way to avoid responsibility there, bucko.
Other Republicans are ducking the question altogether: Nebraska Sen. Deb Fischer wouldn’t comment. Nor would West Virginia Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, who, Sahil Kapur tweeted, “swiftly broke eye contact upon hearing the question and looked away as her senators-only elevator closed.”
And here’s your brave, principled anti-Trump Republican:
Your brave, principled pro-choice Republican senators, meanwhile, are putting their weasel words to use. Even the Republicans who don’t want to admit what they’re doing are going to put Roe in danger. Because that’s how their party works.
