Republicans Question Trump’s Twitter Complaint That They Don’t Have His Back – By Haley Byrd / July 23 2017
President Donald Trump complained on Twitter on Sunday afternoon that Republicans don’t defend him with as much vigor as he would like, leaving GOP lawmakers scratching their heads.
Some congressional Republicans, who have spent a large part of their first six months in session dodging White House scandals and excusing controversial decisions on the part of the president, were quick to question Trump’s allegation.
“I’m sure he meant to say ‘Republican senators,’ but Twitter only affords 140 characters,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) told Independent Journal Review.
Trump’s tweet came amid ongoing investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible ties to the Trump campaign.
Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., and son-in-law Jared Kushner are set to testify before House and Senate intelligence committees next week after it was revealed they met with a Russian lawyer with Russian intelligence connections after being promised dirt on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the summer of 2016.
Trump argued he carried Republican lawmakers to victory — which wasn’t the case for many GOP candidates who carried their districts by a higher margin than Trump did — and that they should be more outspoken in his defense, but some pointed out that isn’t their role.
