Republicans Slam McConnell After He Expresses Support for Omnibus Bill – By Jon Jackson (Newsweek) / Dec 14, 2022
Several prominent Republican lawmakers are publicly criticizing Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky for his willingness to work on a year-end omnibus spending deal with Democrats.
Among those who have publicly spoken out against McConnell are House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy of California and Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
On Tuesday, McConnell told reporters that a deal on an omnibus spending package was “very close” to being complete and set a deadline of December 22. A spending bill would avert a closure of the federal government, but Democrats and Republicans have haggled over a final agreement on defense and domestic spending.
“If a truly bipartisan full-year bill without poison pills is ready for final Senate passage by late next week, then I’ll support it—for our armed forces particularly,” McConnell said on the Senate floor Wednesday. “Otherwise, we’ll be passing a short-term continuing resolution into the new year.”
