Ryan Praises Pelosi’s Eight-Hour Speech, Promises to Bring DACA Bill to Floor If Budget Passes – By William Steakin (ijr.com) / Feb 8 2018
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) agreed on Thursday to bring a solution to the House floor for those affected by the Trump administration’s repeal of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — but only after a newly introduced two-year Senate budget agreement is passed.
“I know there is a real commitment to solving the DACA challenge in both political parties,” Ryan said during his weekly press conference on Thursday on Capitol Hill. The speaker noted that he wants to get a DACA fix passed before the March deadline.
“We will bring a solution to the floor, one the president will sign. We must pass this budget agreement first though so we can get on to that,” Ryan added.
Ryan’s comments come as Washington scrambles to avoid another government shutdown and a day after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) stood for more than 8 hours on the House floor demanding a commitment on floor consideration of DACA bills.
In response to the record-breaking filibuster-style marathon speech, Ryan praised his Democratic colleague. “First of all — my hat is off to her. I don’t know if I could have hacked that for 8 hours,” the speaker said.
“And she wasn’t wearing these kinds of shoes,” Ryan said, referencing Pelosi wearing 4-inch high-heels during her speech. “I would have gone to the bathroom well before that.”
The speaker then reiterated that for a DACA fix to be introduced, a budget deal needs to be nailed out first. “We will bring a DACA solution to the floor.”
“In order to shift our focus and get on to the next big priority, which is a DACA solution, we got to get this budget agreement done.”
While Pelosi announced Thursday that she is a “no” vote on the Senate budget deal, which currently doesn’t include a DACA solution, the House minority leader said she has no plans to whip her Democratic colleagues against the budget deal.
“I’m just telling people why I’m voting the way I’m voting,” Pelosi said.
