Police have named the suspect in a violent attack that saw two staffers working for a Democratic congressman assaulted with a baseball bat and needing hospital treatment.
Xuan Kha Tran Pham, 49, has been arrested after the attack at Gerry Connelly’s office in Fairfax, Virginia. Connolly told CNN one of his staff members was hit in the head while the other, who is an intern on her first day in the job, was hit on the side.
The attacker was reported to be a constituent from Connolly’s district and was said to have caused widespread damage to the office, including shattering glass and breaking computers.
“The thought that someone would take advantage of my staff’s accessibility to commit an act of violence is unconscionable and devastating,” the congressman, Gerry Connolly, said in a statement to media. He also told CNN the suspected attacker “was filled with out of control rage”.
