Teenager arrested in connection with London bombing – By By
(politico.com) / Sept 16 2017British police on Saturday arrested a teenager in connection with Friday’s bombing in London, which left dozens injured.
An 18-year-old man was arrested under the Terrorism Act in the port town of Dover a day after a homemade bomb partially exploded on a subway train at Parsons Green station in West London, injuring 30 people.
The man remains in custody at a local police station and will be transferred to a London police station in due course, Metropolitan Police said.
“We have made a significant arrest in our investigation this morning,” Neil Basu, Senior National Co-ordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, said in a statement. “Although we are pleased with the progress made, this investigation continues and the threat level remains at critical.”
U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday raised the terror threat level from severe to critical, which means further attacks are likely.
Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the blast, the militant group’s Amaq news agency said Friday evening.
“The public should remain vigilant as our staff, officers and partners continue to work through this complex investigation,” Basu said. “We are not, at this time, changing our protective security measures and the steps taken to free up extra armed officers remain in place.”
Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley told reporters on Friday that police believe the explosion, at about 8:20 a.m. local time, was caused by an improvised explosive device. None of the injuries are thought to be life-threatening.
