Texas companies have laid off more workers than 48 other states in 2023 – By Michael Murney (Houston Chronicle) / Feb 24, 2023
Mass layoffs in the tech industry likely account for a big chunk of Texas’ total layoffs in the first two months of this year.
New data may point to trouble in the Lone Star State’s job market.
Texas employers have laid off at least 4,625 people in 2023 so far, according to figures collected by the public policy nonprofit CivMetrics. Only California has seen more laid off workers year, with 11,331 people being dismissed by companies within its borders, according to CivMetrics.
However, it likely that these totals actually represent an undercount of the true number of layoffs in Texas. The nonprofit’s list only includes those layoffs covered by the WARN Act, a federal law that requires companies with more than 100 employees to report cutbacks to their state governments. In other words, those laid off from smaller, non-WARN Act companies aren’t included in CivMetrics’ data.
