The GOP is encouraging Nancy Pelosi to go to Taiwan, despite threats from China – By Alec Regimbal (SFGATE) / July 26, 2022
Members of the GOP are encouraging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to move forward with her plans to visit Taiwan next month, despite warnings from both U.S. and Chinese officials.
Pelosi had planned to visit Taipei — Taiwan’s capital — in April, but moved the trip to August after she tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Financial Times. When news that her trip was rescheduled for August broke last week, China warned it would take “resolute and forceful measures” if the trip moves forward.
Chinese officials didn’t specify what those measures would be, but, according to CNN, China’s Foreign Ministry said the potential trip would “have a severe negative impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and send a gravely wrong signal to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”
