The number of Americans estimated to be living with a mental illness was nearly 60 million in 2021, with a particularly high prevalence reported among young adults ages 18 to 25 and among women.

As part of the 2023 Best States rankings, U.S. News determined which states have the worst mental health by examining the age-adjusted percentage of adults in each state who reported poor mental health in at least 14 of the last 30 days, based on survey data available through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2021, the median age-adjusted prevalence of poor mental health in the U.S. was about 15.3%.
