    1348 The first English order of knighthood is founded.

    1500 Pedro Cabral claims Brazil for Portugal.

    1661 Charles II is formally crowned king, returning the monarchy to Britain, albeit with greatly reduced powers.

    1789 President George Washington moves into Franklin House, New York.

    1856 Free Stater J.N. Mace in Westport, Kansas shoots pro-slavery sheriff Samuel Jones in the back.

    1896 The Vitascope system for projecting movies onto a screen was demonstrated in New York City.

    1970 President Richard Nixon signed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act which would ban the advertising of cigarettes on television and radio beginning on January 2nd, 1971.

    1979 Major oil companies have been reporting sharp profit increases in profits , the profits have been made due to the large increases in supply prices and the President Carter is thinking of implementing a windfall profits tax on oil companies excessive profits

    1984 AIDS-virus identified as HTLV-III (acquired immune deficiency syndrome)

    1985 Coca-Cola releases New Coke The new formula was so unpopular that the original Coke was re-introduced as Coca-Cola Classic soon afterward.

    2001 Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic is arrested on suspicion of corruption, abuse of power, and embezzlement by Serbian authorities at his Belgrade villa.

    2004 The U.S. resumed diplomatic relations with Libya. U.S. President George W. Bush eased sanctions against Libya in return for Moammar Gadhafi’s agreement to give up weapons of mass destruction.

    2005 The first YouTube video is posted The 18-second clip “Me at the zoo” shows co-founder Jawed Karim at San Diego Zoo. It has been viewed more than 13 million times (2014).
