    1683 William Penn signs a friendship treaty with the Lenni Lenape Indians in Pennsylvania.

    1700 Russia gives up its Black Sea fleet as part of a truce with the Ottoman Empire.

    1836 The U.S. Congress approved the Deposit Act, which contained a provision for turning over surplus federal revenue to the states.

    1848 A bloody insurrection of workers erupts in Paris.

    1868 Christopher Latham Sholes received a patent for an invention he called a ”Type-Writer.”

    1894 The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is founded

    1902 Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy renew the Triple Alliance for a 12-year duration.

    1923 The growing membership of the Ku Klax Klan across the US is predicted to make them a political force to be recognized with 1000’s of new members joining every week in ceremonies across the US.

    1934 Italy gains the right to colonize Albania after defeating the country.

    1947 The Senate overrode President Truman’s veto of the Taft-Hartley Act.

    1961 The Antarctic Treaty comes into force The treaty was the first arms control agreement signed during the Cold War. It sets Antarctica aside as a scientific preserve and prohibits military activities on the continent.

    1966 Civil Rights marchers in Mississippi are dispersed by tear gas.

    1972 Richard Nixon and H. R. Haldeman discussed ways to obstruct the FBI’s Watergate investigation. Revelation of this conversation spurred on Nixon’s 1974 resignation.

    1999 Each state is in line to receive large amounts of money after the landmark settlement by the tobacco industry, The money should be used to fund anti smoking measures and help reduce the numbers of smokers in each state but many worry that this major windfall will not be used to help educate our next generation in the dangers to health of smoking.

    2004 The U.S. proposed that North Korea agree to a series of nuclear disarmament measures over a three-month period in exchange for economic benefits.

    2008 A man was charged with drunken driving in a motorized wheelchair after being found asleep off of a highway by police in Cairns, Australia. The man’s blood alcohol level was six times the legal limit and he had told officers he was out to visit friends.

    2016 The UK votes to leave the European Union Just over half of the electorate voted for “Brexit”, Britain’s exit from the EU. The UK had been part of the union since 1973.
