    752 BC Romulus, first king of Rome, celebrates the first Roman triumph after his victory over the Caeninenses, following the Rape of the Sabine Women

    1628 Writs are issued in February by Charles I of England mandating that every county in England (not just seaport towns) pay ship tax by this date

    1692 Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne and Tituba are arrested for the supposed practice of witchcraft in Salem, Mass.

    1776 French minister Charles Gravier advises his Spanish counterpart to support the American rebels against the English

    1780 Pennsylvania becomes the first U.S. state to abolish slavery.

    1781 Continental Congress officially adopts the Articles of Confederation, the first constitution of the United States of America after ratification by the 13th state, Maryland

    1790 The U.S. Congress authorized the first census.

    1803 Ohio becomes the 17th state to join the Union.

    1845 US President John Tyler signs a resolution annexing the Republic of Texas

    1867 Nebraska became the 37th state in the United States.

    1875 Congress passes the Civil Rights Act, which is invalidated by the Supreme Court in 1883.

    1932 The “Lindbergh kidnapping”, 20 month old son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh kidnapped from home in East Amwell, New Jersey, found dead 12 May

    1953 After an all-night movie and dinner session with his top advisers, Joseph Stalin suffers a stroke and collapses. He dies four days later.

    1954 US explodes Castle Bravo, a 15 megaton hydrogen bomb at Bikini Atoll, which accidentally became the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated by the US

    1954 4 Puerto Ricans open fire in US House of Representatives injuring 5 members

    1961 US President JFK establishes the Peace Corps

    1968 High winds blow-off the Philadelphia Spectrum’s roof, forcing the Flyers to play their final month of the NHL season on the road, with home games moved to Toronto, NYC and Quebec City

    1971 A bomb exploded in a restroom in the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol. There were no injuries. A U.S. group protesting the Vietnam War claimed responsibility.

    1980 The US enacts the Crude Oil Windfall Profit Tax Act as part of a compromise between the Carter Administration and the Congress over the decontrol of crude oil prices

    1985 The Pentagon accepts the theory that an atomic war would block the sun, causing a “nuclear winter.”

    2003 In the U.S., approximately 180,000 personnel from 22 different organizations around the government became part of the Department of Homeland Security. This completed the largest government reorganization since the beginning of the Cold War.

    2003 Khalid Shaikh Mohammed was captured by CIA and Pakistani agents near Islamabad. He was the suspected mastermind behind the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.

    2004 Terry Nichols is convicted of state murder charges and being an accomplice to Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh

    2014 29 people are killed & 130 are injured by a group of knife-wielding terrorists at Kunming Railway Station, China
