    534 Second and final revision of the Codex Justinianus published

    1676 1st colonial prison organized, Nantucket, Massachusetts

    1798 British seamen board the U.S. frigate Baltimore and impress a number of crewmen as alleged deserters, a practice that contributed to the War of 1812.

    1821 Trader William Becknell reaches Santa Fe, N.M., on the route that will become known as the Santa Fe Trail.

    1894 6,000 Armenians massacred by Turks in Kurdistan

    1902 A cartoon appears in the Washington Post, prompting the Teddy Bear Craze, after President Teddy Roosevelt refused to kill a captive bear tied up for him to shoot during a hunting trip to Mississippi.  

    1907 The Indian and Oklahoma territories are unified to make Oklahoma, which becomes the 46th state.

    1923 A brief summary of statistics findings regarding saving money was printed. According to one news source, Americans were saving approximately double the amount of money than they were within the previous 10 years.

    1945 UNESCO founded. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a special branch of the United Nations which promotes peace and well-being through education, scientific collaboration and cultural understanding and exchange

    1945 Eighty-eight German scientists, holding Nazi secrets, arrive in the United States.

    1953 The United States joins in the condemnation of Israel for its raid on Jordan.

    1960 After the integration of two all-white schools, 2,000 whites riot in the streets of New Orleans.

    1965 Soviets launch Venera 3. Part of the Venera program, it was the first space probe to land on another planet – Venus. Unfortunately, due to technical issues, it was not able to send any data back to Earth.

    1966 Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard was acquitted in his second trial of charges he had murdered his pregnant wife, Marilyn, in 1954.

    1969 The U.S. Army announced that several had been charged with massacre and the subsequent cover-up in the My Lai massacre in Vietnam on March 16, 1968.

    1973 President Nixon authorizes construction of the Alaskan pipeline

    1988 Estonians declare sovereignty from USSR

    1989 Salvadoran Army death squad kills six Jesuit priests and two others at Jose Simeon Canas University.

    1992 Eric Lawes, while using a metal detector to search for a friend’s lost hammer near Hoxne, Suffolk, England, discovers the Hoxne Hoard, the largest hoard of Roman silver and gold ever found in Britain, and the largest collection of 4th and 5th century coins found anywhere within the bounds of the former Roman Empire

    1998 In Burlington, WIsconsin, five high school students, aged 15 to 16, were arrested in an alleged plot to kill a carefully selected group of teachers and students.

    1998 The U.S. Supreme Court said that union members could file discrimination lawsuits against employers even when labor contracts require arbitration.

    2012 Hostess Brands has announced that they were going to shut down and sell their assets, causing the loss of 18,500 jobs. The maker of “Twinkies” and owner of other brands like Wonder, Merita breads and Drake’s cakes said that they could not continue to operate after a union strike

    2013 About ten people were killed and another twenty were injured in a suicide attack in the city of Kabul. The attack was claimed by the Taliban.
