Rep. Trey Gowdy on Monday questioned why a new Justice Department appointment is needed to oversee the production of document that Congress requested months ago relating to Hillary Clinton’s private email server.
The department said Monday that U.S. Attorney John Lausch would oversee the production of documents for Congress. But Gowdy, who chairs the House government oversight committee, said the department has said for months that it’s working on various requests, and asked why a new person at the top would matter.
“I am trying, without much success, to understand the recent announcement by the Department of Justice with respect to the months old request for documents by Congress,” Gowdy, R-S.C., said in a statement. “I am confident U.S. Attorney John Lausch is a person of competence and character, however, I struggle to understand what has been happening over the previous months since Congress was assured DOJ and FBI were working on the document request. I also struggle to understand U.S. Attorney Lausch’s specific role.”
Republican lawmakers have become increasingly frustrated by DOJ’s refusal to quickly turn over documents related to the FBI’s probe of Clinton’s private email server. Lawmakers have received only a fraction of the material they requested and much of it is was heavily redacted.
“Congress requested these documents months ago. Congress has consistently been assured the production was in progress,” Gowdy added. “How is injecting someone new into an ongoing review and production process calculated to expedite the process?”
Gowdy called on the department “to produce all relevant and responsive documents to Congress, without redactions, immediately.”
