(CNSNews.com) – “I dream about Joe Biden,” President Donald Trump told CBS’s Jeff Glor in an interview taped on Wednesday. Glor asked him if Biden would be a “tough opponent” for Trump in 2020, and Trump’s response aired on CBS Thursday morning:
“He ran three times. He never got more than 1 percent. And president Obama took him out of the garbage heap, and everybody was shocked that he did. I’d love it to be Biden. I think I’d like to have it be any one of those people that we’re talking about. You know, there’s probably the group of seven or eight right now.
I’d really like to — I’d like to run against any one of them. But Biden never by himself could never do anything. President Obama took him, made him vice president, and he was fine. But you go back and look at how he succeeded in running when he ran two or three times. I don’t think he ever broke one. He was at the 1 or less level, 1 percent or less level.
Anchor Gayle King questioned why Trump has to be “so personal and nasty,” by using phrases such as “garbage heap of history.”
Biden has not ruled out a run for president in 2020.
He ran unsuccessfully twice, in 1988 and 2008.
At the Democrat National Convention in 1988, Michael Dukakis was nominated with 70 percent of the delegate vote; Biden received 0.5 percent. And in 2008, when the Democrats ended up nominating Obama, Biden dropped out of the race following his poor showing in the Iowa caucuses. He served as Obama’s vice president for both terms.
Biden has not yet responded to Trump’s comments, but the two men have sparred verbally before this.
This past March, Biden said, ‘If we were in high school, I’d take him (Trump) behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.” Trump tweeted his response, warning Biden not to threaten people with assault because, in an altercation, Biden “would go down hard and fast.”
