On Tuesday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted about his frustrations with Congress and suggested an extreme potential solution: a government shutdown.
Trump appears to be referring to the latest budget not including funding for his campaign promises, like the Mexican border wall. To make it easier for the legislation to pass, he is pushing for his base to elect more Republican senators and/or for the removal of the filibuster, where a senator can demand a two-thirds majority vote.
The most recent full shutdown of the United States federal government took place from September 30 to October 17, 2013. It came about as a result of a dispute over funding of the Affordable Care Act. As a result, 800,000 federal employees were furloughed indefinitely, while another 1.3 million had to report to work without knowing when they would be paid.
