Utah Lawmakers Vote to Legalize Fornication – By Rob Quinn (Newser) / March 7 2019

Sex between unmarried people will no longer be a crime if governor signs bill

(Newser) – The times are a-changing in Utah, where the state legislature has decided to legalize sex between unmarried people. In a 41-32 vote Wednesday, the state House approved Senate Bill 43, which repeals the offense of fornication, Fox 13 reports. Under the state’s criminal code, fornication is currently a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of $1,000, though police and prosecutors haven’t enforced it for years, reports KUTV. The bill will now go to Gov. Gary Herbert, who will either sign it or veto it. Opponents included GOP Rep. Keven Stratton. What is legal “is often far below what is morally right,” he said. “And I recognize our laws are not strong enough to rule an immoral people.”
