Americans are flocking to a group of mostly Western states, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The data, released on Tuesday, indicates that approximately 7.4 million Americans who were at least 1 year old moved from one state to another in 2019. Approximately 200,000 fewer people moved to other states in 2019 than in 2018. Of the 10 states with the highest percentages of residents who lived in a different state the year prior, six were located in the Western part of the U.S.
Washington, D.C., had the highest percentage of residents – more than 9% – who lived elsewhere in 2018. Among states, here are the ones that attracted the most in-migration in 2019, ranked by percentage:
