If you celebrate a secular Christmas, Santa Claus is coming soon, and there are the ornaments, gifts and parties.
Christians mark Dec. 25 as the day to celebrate Christ’s birth with church services, Bible readings and carol singing.
Many Americans celebrate in both ways.
And around New Year’s, there are resolutions and more parties.
But ISIS, for which both Santa and Jesus are anathema, is threatening violence over Christmas and New Year’s, with supporters posting images of a beheaded Santa Claus and fiery explosions in a city square.
The online images threatening violence – one depicting a jihadi entering a blown-up building states ‘Wait for Us on Your Year Parties” – were discovered by the Middle East Media Research Institute.
The organization’s Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor reports: “In the run-up to Christmas and New Year’s, Islamic State (ISIS) supporters have been stepping up threats against the West.
These threats are generally issued in the form of graphic posters shared and circulated by ISIS supporters on social media, primarily on the encrypted messaging app Telegram.”
The report said the “holiday threats, which are part of a recent broader escalation of threats by the group’s supporters, have been against New York City, Washington, D.C., Rome, Paris, and other locations, and have included calls to Muslims in the West to carry out attacks.”
The Internet posts, the report says, “have become another weapon in ISIS’s arsenal of propaganda and incitement; these holiday threat posters are typically accompanied by Arabic hashtags such as #Design, #New_Design, and #Soon_On_Your_Holidays.”
The posts spotlighted by MEMRI include the one above, with images of explosions in a city square and the warning, “Soon on your holidays.”
A horrific image portrays Santa Claus sitting in a rocking chair next to a tree with Christmas presents underneath. The message is: “The Khilafahs presents are on their way.”
But Santa has been executed and he’s holding his head in his lap.
Other messages, scattered across images of violence:
- “Rise against the kuffar”
- “Soon in the Christmas”
- “wemeetatchristmasinnewyork … soon,” which shows a jihadi in front of a cathedral that is being blown up.
Another states: “If you put barriers to cars in front of markets, you will not prevent people from entering them on foot,” with an image of a jihadi next to some of those concrete barriers that do stop vehicles – an increasingly popular terror weapon with multiple vehicle-on-pedestrian attacks by Muslims in recent months.
Over an image of the Coliseum in Rome are the words: “Very soon .. We will be on your Roma victorious conquerors!”
A threat to the Vatican said, “The date is approaching o worshippers of the cross.”
“Message Delivered,” states another. “Flames of War Very Soon In Your Homes.” It’s dated Jan. 1.
It would not be the first time Islamic terrorists have attacked on a holiday.
On Christmas Day in 2009, 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, wearing explosives in his clothing, tried to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253 with 290 people aboard before it landed in Detroit. Al-Qaida claimed responsibility.
Had the attack been successful it would have become the deadliest single aviation attack on U.S. soil.
