Republican Rep. Devin Nunes irresponsibly encourages Americans to ‘just go out’ despite coronavirus spread – By Lauren Theisen (New York Daily News) / March 15 2020

Despite U.S. health experts urging a dramatic reduction in social interactions to combat the rapid spread of coronavirus, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) is on cable news encouraging Americans to ignore this crucial advice.

On Fox News Sunday morning, Nunes argued that Americans should “stop panicking” about coronavirus, and stop fighting at stores over toilet paper and bottled water, which is a reasonable plea. But then he followed it up with an ignorant call for more people to go out to eat.

“There’s a lot of concerns with the economy here because people are scared to go out. One of the things you can do, if you’re healthy, you and your family, it’s a great time to just go out, go to a local restaurant ― likely you can get in easily,” he said. “Let’s not hurt the working people in this country that are relying on wages and tips to keep their small business going. Just don’t run to the grocery store and buy $4,000 of food. Go to your local pub.”

Nunes’ comments went unchallenged by the interviewer, but what went unsaid is that even if people are “feeling healthy” they can still infect others with coronavirus, because the illness doesn’t cause everybody who has it to show symptoms. And though, yes, food-service workers in the U.S. are going to be hurt economically by social distancing, they’re also at a high risk of becoming sick at their jobs because they come into contact with so many people every day.
