GOP Rep.: AHCA Penalty May Not Be Enough to ‘Drag Folks’ Into Health Care Market

How big of a penalty does there need to be to put fear into people to sign up for health insurance – PB/TK 

Speaking on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) said “we’re still not completely sure” if the penalty in the GOP health care bill is enough to “drag folks who believe they’re invincible into participating in the health care market.”

“[W]e’ve put in our legislation one that you would have to pay an additional premium by some one-third if you weren’t carrying insurance,” Rep. Schweikert said. “We’re still not completely sure that’s enough of a penalty to drag folks who believe they’re invincible, into participating in the healthcare market.”

In the American Health Care Act (AHCA and ACA), proposed by House Republicans in early March,  insurance companies would have to charge people 30% more in premiums for a full year, if in the previous year they did not have health insurance for 63 days or longer.

Schweikiert was responding to Fox host Maria Bartiromo about why anyone would buy insurance until they get sick, if coverage for those with a pre-existing condition would be guaranteed.
