Described as a “guardian angel” and a hero, Houston ICU nurse Christie Purviance has often worked 15-hour days to help COVID-19 patients at Memorial Hermann Hospital Northeast Hospital. Now, she’s being honored for her selfless dedication with a new Mazda MX-5 Miata, as a special “thank you” for extraordinary efforts in the pandemic.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” Purviance told Chron. “It’s definitely surreal. I never pictured anything like this would happen. I’m one of thousands of nurses that deserve this recognition.”

When Purviance’s sister heard about the Mazda Heroes program, she nominated her for the award. Then, the stars aligned and Purviance became one of the 50 winners and was rewarded with a 100th Anniversary Special Edition Miata.

Beyond the Mazda Heroes award, Purviance also has received two Daisy Awards, which recognizes compassionate care and exemplary service in nursing.
