There’s a big difference between politics and principles. Politics is a messy business, and among the people involved in it, there is very little consistency. An action taken by Joe Schmo (R-XX) may be roundly condemned by Democrats and the legacy media (but I repeat myself), but the exact same action taken by Harold Snuffy (D-OO) is overlooked. Both sides, to be fair, do this to some extent.
Principles, on the other hand, must be constant. If action A is wrong, then it is wrong no matter who takes said action.
That’s why politicians are, correctly, so often accused of hypocrisy: because they are hypocrites. This game, whatever it was in the past, from the Founding onward, is not about serving the American people or preserving the principles of the republic; it’s about winning elections, holding on to power, and helping your partisan colleagues do the same, even if it means overlooking some uncomfortable transgressions.
