HA! Russia’s foreign ministry is gonna “stamp” fake news stories and sites it doesn’t agree with it, even without proof the story is fake or not… Where have I heard this before – PB/TK

(CNSNews.com) – Russia’s foreign ministry has launched an initiative to brand as “fake news” media reports with which it disagrees, but critics are mocking the name-and-shame effort, which at this stage includes no evident fact-checking of the identified articles.

Labeled with a big red stamp on the official foreign ministry website are five Western news reports – one each from the New York Times, Bloomberg, Daily Telegraph, NBCNews.com and Santa Monica Observer.

In each case, the ministry has published a screenshot of and link to the offending article, stamped “FAKE: It contains false information.”

The ministry does not give any explanation for judging the article to be untrue, but delivers the verdict with a single sentence: “This article puts forward information that does not correspond to reality.”

The Moscow Times headlined its story on the ministry effort: “Russia’s Foreign Ministry Joins the Battle Against Fake News. (Seriously)” and posted on Twitter: “’No YOU’RE fake news,’ Russian foreign ministry screams at reporters in big bold red letters.”

Russian opposition activist and former world chess champion Garry Kasparov commented, “As I’ve said before, there’s a word for fake news in Putin’s Russia. It’s ‘news.’ ”
