Amid the president’s push for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul claimed the wall isn’t the best option for curbing illegal immigration and suggested another solution.
Paul, who is a three-time presidential candidate and served as a congressman from Texas, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that instead of creating a wall between the two countries, President Donald Trump should remove incentives for immigrants wanting to come to the U.S. illegally.

“I don’t like walls,” Paul said. “I don’t want to wall people in and wall people out.”
“I don’t want free, open borders either,” he added. “I think you have to remove the incentives for people to come.”
Paul’s son, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), has also shared his view on funding for the border wall — he suggested compromising between the president’s over $5 billion in border wall funding and Democrats’ lack of funding in order to open the government.

The partial government shutdown continues as the president is set to deliver a televised presidential address scheduled for 9 p.m. on Tuesday to highlight border security and convince Democrats to fund a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border to curb illegal immigration.
As IJR Red reported, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) wrote a joint statement stating it was unfair for the president to deliver an address without giving Democrats the “equal airtime” to rebuke his statements.
Along with the address in the Oval Office late Tuesday, the president is also scheduled to visit the southern border on Thursday to “meet with those on the frontlines of the national security and humanitarian crisis.”
