Organizer Of North Carolina Anti-Lockdown Protests Tests Positive For COVID-19 – By Jake Thomas (Intellectualist) / April 26 2020
Audrey Whitlock had to quarantine for 14 days after testing positive, which she said violated her 1st Amendment rights.
One of the organizers of North Carolina’s protests against the state’s stay-at-home order has tested positive for the coronavirus, according to local news station CBS17, but she reports showing no symptoms of the illness.
Audrey Whitlock shared a post to ReOpen NC’s Facebook page on Sunday that she was wrapping up her two-week quarantine, writing that she was “an asymptomatic COVID19 positive patient.”
ReOpen NC helped put together two protests against Governor Roy Cooper’s stay-at-home order and has said it will hold protests every Tuesday until Cooper lifts the restrictions. But the governor appears unfazed, as CBS17 noted he recently extended the order until May 8.
Whitlock wrote that the state-mandated quarantine violated her First Amendment rights: “The reality is that modern society has not been able to eradicate contagious viruses. A typical public health quarantine would occur in a medical facility. I have been told not to participate in public or private accommodations as requested by the government, and therefore denied my 1st amendment right of freedom of religion.”
She added that “It has been insinuated by others that if I go out, I could be arrested for denying a quarantine order,” which she claimed would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.
North Carolina has seen 306 coronavirus-related deaths during the pandemic.
