“They may not prove to be safe and effective, but we’ll have it so we can begin administration right away.”
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar appeared on CBS’ Face the Nation this week to discuss his agency’s project to get a coronavirus vaccine to the American public as soon as possible, but he admitted the eventual vaccine might not be “safe and effective.”
HHS created Operation Warp Speed (OWS) as a private-public partnership to expedite vaccine production for the novel coronavirus.
Host Margaret Brennan questioned Azar on how a vaccine will be developed and administered and when it will be done.
As cases continue to soar in the United States, time is of the essence. Speeding up the vaccine by weeks or even days could save countless lives. Azar said one of the big goals of OWS is to wring “the inefficiency out of the process” by funding the private sector to create the vaccine.
