Cardinal Theodore McCarrick Cited ‘Sense of Humanity’ in ‘Holy Book’ of ‘The Koran’ – By CNSNews.com Staff (cnsnews.com) / Aug 31 2018
(CNSNews.com) – Cardinal Theodore McCarrick gave a speech at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on June 8, 2001, when he was the archbishop of Washington, in which he noted the “sense of humanity” found in “all the holy books,” including “the Koran.”
“But for everyone, not just Christians, there is a sense of humanity,” McCarrick said in an address that was televised on CSPAN.
“It’s in all the books, all the holy books,” McCarrick said. “It’s in the Koran. It’s in the Bible. It’s in the writings of the eastern religions, this great sense of the wonder of the human being, this great sense of what man can do.”
In June, the church removed Cardinal McCarrick from public ministry because it found “credible” the allegation that he had abused a teenage boy. “A church panel determined that a former altar boy’s allegations that McCarrick fondled him during preparations for Christmas Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1971 and 1972 were ‘credible and substantiated,’” the Associated Press reported on June 20.
On July 28, the pope accepted McCarrick’s resignation as a cardinal of the church, removed him from public ministry and ordered him to remain within a house for the remainder of his life.
Here is an excerpt from McCarrick’s 2001 speech at the National Press Club:
“We have that kind of awe that God has made us so wonderful, that God has given us such a tremendous opportunity for vision, for love, for adventure, for all the great, beautiful, joyful things of life. And it is because God has given us of this that each individual must enjoy that. Each individual should have that kind of ability. Each individual should be able to live in that way and love in that way. Each individual should be able to enjoy his humanity or her humanity in the best and most (proper?) and wonderful way.
“For us Christians, it is a dignity that is enhanced, of course, by the redemption, by the fact that God so loved the world that He sent his only son to be like us, so that all of us might become, in every way, filled with the wonder of His love. But for everyone, not just Christians, there is a sense of humanity. It’s in all the books, all the holy books. It’s in the Koran. It’s in the Bible. It’s in the writings of the eastern religions, this great sense of the wonder of the human being, this great sense of what man can do.”
