(Newser) – The missing texts that President Trump called “one of the biggest stories in a long time” have now been recovered, the Justice Department’s inspector general says. Michael Horowitz told lawmakers Thursday that his office, “using forensic tools to recover text messages from FBI devices,” has recovered messages sent between FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page between Dec. 2016 and May 2017, CNN reports. Strzok— who was having an affair with Page—was kicked off Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation team when it emerged that the pair, who were involved in both the Mueller investigation and the Hillary Clinton email probe, had been exchanging anti-Trump messages.
Republicans had been very suspicious about the period of missing messages, which ended May 17—the day Mueller was appointed special counsel. The Justice Department said the record was incomplete for technical reasons. Horowitz says the effort to recover more messages is ongoing. Republican Sen. Charles E. Grassley, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released some previously recovered messages Thursday that he said called into question the impartiality of the Clinton and Trump investigations, the Washington Post reports. In a Feb. 2016 discussion of the Clinton case, Page wrote: “One more thing: she might be our next president. The last thing you need us going in there loaded for bear. You think she’s going to remember or care that it was more doj than fbi?” (The pair also insulted Bernie Sanders and Chelsea Clinton, among others.)

PB/TK – Glad the text messages were found (as if they were ever lost). But I’m getting tired of Judiciary Committee releasing random transcripts to help their narrative, pro or con. Either release all transcripts or none at all until the case is closed
